Get to know Misty…
Q: Where are you originally from?
Q: When did you start working for A. O. Smith?
I started in January of 2000 as a temporary employee on a three month assignment paying claims. At some point in time an employee left and I was offered her position as a deduction representative. I became a full time employee in June of 2000.
Q: Little known fact about yourself (that you don’t mind other people knowing).
I have become my very own 'handyman.' I like doing new projects around the house. I will try to do almost anything with the mindset that the worst thing that can happen is me breaking something.
Q: What hobbies do you have outside of A. O. Smith?
I like to shop and when it is nice outside, I like to work in my yard.
Q: What do you like best about working here?
It is a constant challenge; it is not a boring job. The people are great to work with.
Q: What’s the most interesting part of your job?
The most interesting part of my job is being exposed to the many different situations. Considering I am a people person I enjoy meeting new people both inside and outside of the organization.
Q: What is your key motivation?
Getting results and seeing things come together.
Q: Tell me about some accomplishments you’re most proud of while working at A. O. Smith.
The biggest accomplishment for me would be seeing the two departments that were once struggling come together. Everyone now works well together and has put in the work to make the departments better and more structured. I like to look back at where the departments were when I took them over and where they are now.
Q: Which of the A. O. Smith Values do you identify most closely with?
A. O. Smith will be a Good Place to Work- I am big on people working together. We are here more than we are with our families, and it is important that we make the best out of every day. In my opinion it is important for people to enjoy coming to work, and not look at it as it’s just a job. It takes all of us working together to accomplish our goals. If that means rolling up your sleeves and helping out then that’s what you have to do. It’s not just that I am earning a paycheck, it’s being engaged with employees and knowing that they really take ownership of their job.
Q: What do you consider your keys to success? (people or practices at the company that have helped you succeed)
Having a supportive boss has been huge. Also, having great employees. Without them there would be no me.
Q: Have you participated in any training or development programs you felt were useful?
Tons and tons of classes! When I first took over the warranty department I did not have any experience when it came to supervising. At that time there were a lot of classes available and I took advantage of all of them. If I had to pick my favorite it would be Decision Base. Overall every class I have taken has taught me what I should and should not do as a supervisor or manager.
Q: What book are you currently reading?
Currently I am not reading a book. However, the last book I read was the Hunger Game series.
Q: What was the first concert you went to and where was it?
A: New Addition in the 80's at the Municipal Auditorium.
Q: Who is your greatest inspiration?
My mom. My mom was a single parent of four. She is a strong individual. She taught me and my siblings that in order to have anything you have to work hard. Nobody is going to give you anything, you have to earn it. Always give 100%.
Q: If you could meet any person, dead or alive, who would it be?
My grandmother; she was killed in a car wreck when I was two. I hear a lot of good things about her, and I feel like it would have been nice to know her.
